Geographical background: Strandja massif with an area of 10 000 sq.m. is situated in the South-Eastern part of the Balkan peninsula on the territory of two countries – Bulgaria and Turkey; it has the shape of an irregular triangle, parallel to the Black Sea coast from Bourgas almost to Istanbul. The highest peak – Machiada (1031m) is in Turkey. In the Bulgarian part the highest peak is Golyamo Gradishte (709m) close to Malko Tarnovo.
A wild journey through Strandja
“Strandja is the mountain of Thracians, land of dolmen, temples and tombs, a land over where over ancient Thracian consecrated ground Christian temples and chapels arose centuries later. Here paganism and Christianity are entwined in a colorful string that draws the parameters of the Bulgarian culture and faith.
Strandja is a receptacle of mysticism, beautiful nature and pictorial landscapes, a land of folklore traditions preserved since those times”
We wouldn’t be able to generalize our perceptions of the region where we made our wild tour in a better way of, so we picked this quotation.
